Lighting And Illumination Through The Years

Toronto during the 2013 Earth Hour

Somethings are beautiful at night and somethings are greatly appreciated because their beauty can only be seen at night. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if light was not created? Have you ever thought what it would be like to spend the night without the guiding light of the stars and the moon or the day without the sun? It would be totally scary. I am not sure then if we need our eyes if that happens. But thankfully, we are brought into this world where light is present during the day and especially during the night. It is not just there for our appreciation but to serve as our guide and security.

Our history tells us that it was not Thomas Edison who invented the first electric light but Sir Joseph Joseph Swan, a British physicist and chemist who who invented the first incandescent light bulb which was patented on November 27, 1980. However, it was Thomas Alva Edison, American inventor and businessman, who invented the first commercially practical incandescent light. Several years later, government here and abroad issued a ban in producing and importing the incandescent light bulbs mainly because of its energy consumption. It was replaced by a more environmental friendly and cost efficient bulbs like halogen lamps, compact florescent lamps or CFL and Light Emitting Diode which is popularly known as LED.

But for me, even if we will still using be using candles or torches, I am fine as long as we do not live in the dark. But then again, I am glad that we have inventors and lighting designers who made a way of improving the traditional lights that we have. I am not sure if we are able to enjoy a night stroll in the park or our streets without the gooseneck lights or pole lights illuminating our way. Sure, the candles and/or torches paving our way will look romantic but I am only on special occasions which calls for it.
